E911 Disclosure
Last updated: January 1, 2025
What is E911?
Enhanced 911 (E911) is a system that automatically provides your location information to emergency services when you call 911. For traditional landline phones, this location is determined by your physical phone line connection. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services handle E911 differently.
VoIP E911 Limitations
Your hosted VoIP service from Charleston Telecom Solutions provides E911 capabilities, but there are important limitations you should be aware of:
- E911 calls are routed based on the registered address you provide, not automatically determined by your physical location.
- If you move your VoIP phone to a different physical location, emergency responders may be dispatched to your registered address, not your actual location.
- E911 service may not function during a power outage or internet service interruption.
- Softphone apps (mobile or desktop) used away from your registered address will transmit your registered address to 911, not your actual location.
- You must update your registered E911 address if you permanently move or frequently use your phone from a different location.
Your Responsibility
By subscribing to CTS VoIP services, you acknowledge and accept the following responsibilities:
- 1Register and keep your E911 address current and accurate at all times.
- 2Inform all users of your phone system about the E911 limitations described in this disclosure.
- 3Maintain a non-VoIP phone line or mobile phone for emergency use in case of internet or power outage.
- 4Place a visible notice near your VoIP phones informing users of these limitations.
